Chapter Eight

“Garret!” Connie hollered up at him from where she stood in the front yard, hands on her hips, giving him that supposed fierce look he’d learned in the past four days to kiss right off her face. “Come down from the roof right now before you get hurt.”

“My leg’s already mostly healed and has a steel rod running through it!” he shouted while hammering another new shingle. “If I fall, what’s the worst that can happen?”

“You break the other one!”

He waved her off and kept right on hammering. Lord, but it felt good being useful again. Felt even better being back with his girl. Granted, there’d been nothing official said between them, but since their talk over frying chicken, there’d been a subtle change even his mother had noticed. Their on-air battles were still heated, but no blood was spilled. And their kisses… If they didn’t get a chance to take things further soon, he’d explode. Which was why he was now perched on a sweltering roof after an already grueling day.

Hmm… With Lindsay at a friend’s practicing lines and not due home till after supper, what was he doing up here on the roof when he could be working his way into Connie’s bedroom? Sure, with him soon returning to Virginia, and too many unresolved issues between them, bed was the last place they needed to be. But even knowing all that did nothing to stop the wanting.

The aluminum ladder’s metallic jiggle alerted him that he’d soon have company. “Garret,” Connie complained, poking that pretty head of hers just above the gutter, “I really wish you’d get down from there. My roof has happily leaked for five years. Why this sudden compulsion for you to fix it today?”

“It’s supposed to rain all day tomorrow.”

“Yes, that occasionally happens around here.”

“Well? Do you want your ceilings to cave in?”

“No, but—”

“Woman, quit being contrary. I’ve got this handled. Or are you up here wanting to help?”

“Me? Help fix the roof?” Eyes huge, she surveyed the gabled slope. To him, it didn’t seem all that steep.

“Heck, yeah. Get those sweet buns up here and hand me another shingle.”

Though it took her a good five minutes to crawl cautiously on all fours beside him, by the time she’d made it, he was as tickled by the proud smile on her face as she was. “Wow, look at this view….”

“See? Roofing’s not all that bad, is it?” Unless, of course, you happened to be in his shoes, seated beside a rooftop goddess whose deceptively simple white T-shirt was soaked with sweat and showing a tad more of her blue-and-white-polka-dotted bra than was probably proper. Her complexion glowed from the heat, making it official—she was the most gorgeous roofer in all of Oklahoma.

“Gimme the hammer,” she said, shingle already in hand. “What do I do?”

He positioned it for her, handed her nails, then let her pound away.

“This is fun,” she said. “Hand me another.”

“Hey,” he teasingly complained, “I thought you were supposed to be assisting me?”

She stuck out her tongue while he did her bidding.
